It’s official: English Whisky has achieved Geographical Indication (GI) status.
This is great news for our industry. A Legal GI that recognises English Whisky for its quality, provenance and authenticity.
The GI ensures English Whisky has the same level of legal protection for Whisky as in the other home nations, whilst giving a framework from which whisky made here in England can flourish and thrive. Great for those making whisky to already high standards. Even better for those who enjoy fantastic whisky.
For us, it’s validation of how we’ve done things from day one with our “field-to-bottle” process…
-
100% home-grown regeneratively farmed barley from our family farm at Hunmanby Grange.
-
Water sourced directly from chalk aquifers below the farm.
-
Distilled and matured right here on the Yorkshire coast.
“This GI has been painstakingly developed over a number of years, to protect the quality, integrity and focus on provenance and flavour, that has defined English Whisky over the past two decades.
It provides a robust framework from which the category can flourish and thrive long into the future.
As farmers, as well as distillers, we’re particularly pleased that the GI stipulates that to be labelled an ‘English whisky’, it must be made from UK cereal grain, thereby directly supporting British agriculture.”
