Enjoying: Yorkshire Day – A Celebration of Pride, Place and Spirit
Every year, on the 1st of August, Yorkshire comes together to celebrate everything that makes our county so special. From the rolling green hills to our rugged coastline, to the centuries of history and the warm welcome of our people, Yorkshire Day is a moment to pause and appreciate it all.
A Brief History of Yorkshire Day
The origins of Yorkshire Day go back further than you might think. The date itself, 1st August marks the anniversary of the Battle of Minden in 1759, where Yorkshire regiments fought with distinction. It’s also linked to the abolition of slavery in 1834, a cause passionately supported by Yorkshire MPs. Over time, the date became a rallying point for celebrating the county’s heritage, culture and community spirit.
What started in the 1970s as a way of promoting Yorkshire’s identity has grown into a county-wide celebration recognised far beyond our borders. Towns and villages host events and come together to raise a glass to this remarkable place.
Yorkshire Day at Spirit of Yorkshire
For us, Yorkshire Day isn’t just a date in the calendar, it’s one of the highlights of our year. We mark the occasion every year with the release of our annual Filey Bay Yorkshire Day whisky.
Each year’s release is unique, with casks carefully selected by our Whisky Director, Joe Clark to showcase the best of our maturing stocks. Filey Yorkshire Day 2025 is now available online and at our Distillery Shop here in Hunmanby.
